PRESENT DAY

Jealousy is a terrible predator, and something we gods are guilty of. Gods are predators, as you very well know. Mortals are quite aware of the way the divine play with their lives by now, at least some of them. Those that cast their lot at dice or cards or in places of worship scream Why! at the top of their lungs when they do not get their way. While others yet are blessed over and over with the turn of a card or the turn of a phrase.

It is not our fault.

Although technically it is.

We have favorites, and can you blame us? Even in my domain, where I am not allowed to interfere with mortal lives, my wife is immune. In her six months where she walks the mortal plane, she can interfere as much as she likes. And while in her eternity of godhood, she’s done so once before, she found another recent mortal life very intriguing.

She took a liking to Eurydice very well.

Persephone is said to be mercurial like the seasons, but the seasons have no such mercurial intent. They are organized and have their plans: fallow, birth, life, death. Is it any wonder that such an organized goddess with such a long view would take kindly to Eurydice? A woman with similar views? Women like Eurydice and goddesses like Persephone stick together.

This is something I have known for quite some time.

And something a devoted husband never objects to.

Persephone returned to me one cooling evening and said, “This one, Eurydice, I want to talk to her when she comes to us. That all right with you?”

And I turned to her and said, “Of course you may, my love. She is terribly wronged, as you once were. It only makes sense that it would be you, my dear, my sweet, who would teach this songbird that there is a Coda after the Fin.”

My beautiful wife smiled at me then and we watched the story of Eurydice and Orpheus play out. We did not interfere when the awful and terrible Aristaeus became involved. A young man who’d already gained a reputation for playing favorites and cruel jealousy, as well as a penchant for pushing anyone (and everyone) out of his way to get what he wants.

However, my wife will do the same.

The seasons are pretty brutal, don’t you know?

I tend not to get involved in mortal lives. It is not my place, as I have been told over and over. I was told: Hades, you have ultimate power, once the mortal’s life has ended. Otherwise, you do nothing. So, I do nothing until death. Then, I provide for them a place prove themselves, to judge them or allow them to ascend or descend accordingly.

Persephone, though? She is her own woman. A good husband does not control his wife. A good relationship is one of equals, where the partners recognize the strengths of the other or others. Where the partners allow them to play out, and complement one another.

This is why Persephone and I last in bliss while the other gods quarrel.
